How the QGC Gives Back To Our Communities
As active members of the communities we live in, QGC members are always pleased to be able to give back to our neighbors in need. Each QGC chapter takes on several worthy causes every year, from hosting charitable events to donating skill, time and equipment.
Consider for example the women’s shelter in Suffolk. “The building was about 19-20 years old, “recalls Ray Cobb, chairman of the Suffolk chapter, “and they were having a lot of problems with their heating equipment.” What they didn’t’ have was $25,000 it would cost to replace it, so Cobb’s group worked to get the much-needed equipment donated by their suppliers, then performed all the installation work free of charge, just as they did for a seriously ill women’s family.
The Southside chapter sent a Christmas care package off to the 101st Airborne in Afghanistan after learning a member’s son was stationed there. And the association’s annual golf tournament has risen over $47,000 for local charities for 16 years, including St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children and Hope Haven Children’s Home in Virginia Beach. “QGC members participate in it one way or the other, doing their part to help make people lives better,” said Vincent O’Brien, chairman of the Southside chapter.
Richard Hibbard, chairman of the Peninsula chapter, recently spearheaded an effort by this group to replace the aging HVAC equipment at a rescue mission for the homeless. “It’s a kind of men’s home,” describes Hibbard, “and we put in four heating and cooling systems that we got three different companies to donate.” The entire project was worth about $40,000, Hibbard estimates.
QGC members cheerfully play Santa Claus for underprivileged kids, take on work at reduced or no cost for families facing difficult situations, donate time and talents to groups that need a helping hand and willingly reach out whenever there is a need.
We also look out for communities in other ways that are just as important. “ I run into four or five systems a year that have been installed improperly by people who didn’t know what they were doing, “says Cobb, who is pleased that QGC admits only those contractors who are capable of performing quality work and are willing to stand behind it. “I hear horror stories all the time about contractors who just want to get in the door so they can make a buck, but don’t do the job right and won’t come back to fix any problems. They’re taking advantage of people and it’s a really big problem we have here.”
That’s one of the reasons all QGC chapters carefully scrutinizes any contractor who wants to become a member and holds classes on a regular basis. QGC is also working to try and have stronger consumer protection laws passed at the state level. QGC members have gone to Richmond on behalf of a bill that would close some licensing loopholes. “If you’re not out there today to fight for what’s best for the homeowners, in my opinion you shouldn’t even be in business, “says Cobb.
For a Qualified Gas Contractor, it’s all just part of putting our communities first.
